Joel Klatt believes in Iowa football for the College Football Playoff

Could 2025 be the year that the Iowa Hawkeyes break down the door and make their first trip to the College Football Playoff? The Hawkeyes are overdue for breaking through and getting to the postseason. The question all these years has been the offense.

This year, they may have the missing piece to the offense. Iowa has brought in South Dakota State transfer quarterback and two-time national champion Mark Gronowski to lead Tim Lester’s offense in his second year as offensive coordinator.

One firm believer in Gronowski and Iowa is Joel Klatt. He believes Gronowski can excel at Iowa and could be the catalyst for Iowa to get into the College Football Playoff.

“Gronowski is a hell of a player. He’s won two national championships, was the Walter Payton winner two years ago, has been a four-year starter that started 55 games in his career and won 49 off them at South Dakota State. He’s a big guy, brings a run threat. He’s 6-3, 230 pounds. He’s got 37 rushing touchdowns in his career. So, I think this is Iowa’s best quarterback option they’ve had in years. Gronowski will be behind one of the better offensive lines in the country. … So I believe they’ll be in close games, I believe in Mark Gronowski, and I think they’ll win those close games,” Klatt said.

“Can they go 10-2? Maybe. I look at this team, and again, Mark Gronowski, I think he’s going to be excellent. I really do. Can this team go 10-2? The answer is yes,” continued Klatt.

Mark Gronowski comes to Iowa with a bevvy of expectations to elevate the offense as he pairs with Lester. The pieces are in place for the Hawkeyes offensively, but as in years past, the question comes down to production on the field against Big Ten opponents.
