USC football’s Jayden Maiava must earn respect in Big Ten QB rankings

The disrespect continues for USC quarterback Jayden Maiava. He got his chance to start for USC last season in the last four games after Miller Moss got benched. In those four games, he threw for 11 touchdowns and had 5 interceptions with 1,135 passing yards.

Even with a high number of turnovers in his final performance in the bowl game versus Texas A&M, Maiava still showed a lot of promise. His exciting skill set was put on display. Yet, analysts aren’t convinced heading into 2025. Maiava still was slotted as the seventh-best quarterback in the Big Ten by college football analyst Josh Pate of CBS Sports.

USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg doubled down on this analysis and had Maiava a notch down in his recent quarterback rankings.

“Maiava is the unquestioned starter for the Trojans after Miller Moss transferred to Louisville. Formerly of UNLV, Maiava went 3-1 after taking over last November but really struggled with turnovers, tossing five across the Trojans’ loss to Notre Dame and bowl win against Texas A&M.”

Maiava has his experience as a starter, and he has some of the best wide receivers in the country. Yet he is still placed behind quarterbacks such as Julian Sayin from Ohio State, who will be making his first start this season. This now marks two quarterback rankings that have Maiava low on the totem pole. It’s perfect bulletin board material for Maiava as he tries to produce a breakout season.
