North Carolina eyeing a move to SEC, according to report

Oklahoma and Texas are the freshest members of the Southeastern Conference. Their status as new kids on the block may not last long, though.

Inside Carolina, which covers the North Carolina Tar Heels for 247Sports, reported earlier this week that the athletic department brass is exploring a possible move to the SEC. North Carolina-Chapel Hill, as its called in the state system, has been in the Atlantic Coast Conference since 1953.

Sources said the 2030-31 school year, when the ACC’s decreasing exit fees dip from $93 million to the flat $75 million threshold, would figure to become an important final line of demarcation, if the Tar Heels haven’t made their departure sooner. – Adam Smith at Inside Carolina.

According to his report, employees of the university would prefer a move to the Big Ten because of its superior academic reputation. Fans would prefer the SEC. The football team’s hiring of NFL coaching icon Bill Belichick to run the Tar Heels program provides evidence that UNC is aiming high in that sport, at least.

“We’re investing more in football with the hope and ambition that the return is going to significantly outweigh the investment,” North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham told reporters at the time.

Oklahoma and Texas accepted invitations to join the SEC in June 2021. The two schools didn’t officially make the move from the Big 12 until the 2024-25 academic year. Texas fit in quickly, especially in football, but Oklahoma struggled to a sub-.500 season in its first year.
