CLEMSON — Clemson football will add a fifth quarterback to its 2025 roster with the return of Hunter Helms.
Helms was set to be a student coach for the Tigers, but he will become a player/coach similar to Paul Tyson in 2024, according to a team spokesperson. Helms will dress out for games and be used in an emergency role. The spokesperson added his enrollment needs to be figured out first before officially joining the roster.
Helms was a walk-on player turned scholarship recipient who played at Clemson 2020-23. He played in nine games with his best coming against Georgia Tech in 2020, completing 5 of 7 passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns. He transferred to Rhode Island in 2024, throwing for 1,270 yards with five touchdowns and nine interceptions in nine games.
It is unlikely Helms sees much playing time unless Clemson is winning a blowout game, but his addition will add depth to the team’s quarterbacks room. Cade Klubnik is the Tigers’ starting quarterback who has Heisman trophy aspirations and could be a first round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Behind him is his likely successor, Christopher Vizzina. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney tries to add a quarterback every recruiting cycle but didn’t take one in 2024 because of his belief in Vizzina, a four-star prospect out of Briarwood Christian High School in Birmingham, Alabama.
Then, there’s Trent Pearman, who was a walk-on last season. He has completed 2 of 5 passes for eight yards in 19 career snaps over two seasons.
Clemson also added three-star quarterback Chris Denson in the 2025 cycle. He is a dual-threat passer who will have time to develop.
The Tigers begin preseason practice July 31.
