Former Florida DL placed on non-football injury list due to weight

Former Florida football defensive lineman Desmond Watson has been placed on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ non-football injury list because of his excessive weight.

Standing 6-feet-5-inches tall and weighing 449 pounds, Watson is the heaviest player in NFL history. He signed with the Buccaneers after going undrafted in April.

Head coach Todd Bowles mentioned on Wednesday that Watson and the team are trying to get him to be a better and healthier player.

“It’s just about trying to get him better, to be a healthier player and getting him on the field a little more,” Bowles said. “That’s kind of where I’m at right now. He’s working at it and we’re working with him and that’s all you can ask right now.”

Bowles continued, “I don’t have a timetable on what we can get him down to or when that comes. He’s from Armwood, he went to Florida, so he’s used to the heat. That’s not a big factor in it. We’ve just got to see what happens.”

During his time in Gainesville, Watson had never missed a single game. He appeared in every matchup last season and totaled 20 tackles (six solo), a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry.

During the 2024 season, Watson logged a season-high three tackles against the Miami Hurricanes, Texas A&M Aggies and Kentucky Wildcats. He also logged a season-high 32 snaps on defense against the Florida State Seminoles.
