Oklahoma State football storylines as 2025 preseason practice begins

STILLWATER — The Oklahoma State football team will take the field Monday for its first practice of preseason camp, signaling the season’s official beginning.

Questions abound for the new-look Cowboys after an offseason that started with coach Mike Gundy renegotiating his contract and firing all of his offensive and defensive assistants.

The new staff brought in 62 players, mostly via the transfer portal, and while the end result is impossible to predict, the cast of characters will be vastly different from the team that went 3-9 a year ago.

With the season opener a month away — set for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 28 against Tennessee-Martin at Boone Pickens Stadium — the Pokes have a lot of work ahead to figure out what kind of squad they’ve got.

An offseason of change leads to a preseason of uncertainty.

So let’s take a look at some of the most important storylines looming over preseason camp:

Can the Cowboys block?

Sure, the quarterback competition is the more intriguing discussion of the preseason. But the development of the offensive line is more critical to ultimate success.

All five starters plus a couple of second-teamers are gone from a year ago, and a group of new faces will fill the majority of starting roles. 

But who will that be? And are they good enough to protect the quarterback and open holes for the running backs?

It appears that OSU added individual talent up front to blend with a few returning players who have shown promise in the past. 

But the individuals have to mesh as a group, playing for new coaches. 

To this point, there’s no reason to believe this offensive line isn’t capable of being better than what the Cowboys put on the field during their winless Big 12 run last year.

But there’s also no evidence to understand how good they might actually be. And…
