Penn State football team places 3 players on Maxwell Award watch list

Three Penn State seniors were named Monday to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, presented to the nation’s outstanding college football player.

Quarterback Drew Allar and running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen are among the 80 players recognized. Penn State is the only team with three players on the list.

Allar enters his third season as a starter ranked first in school history in completion percentage and interception percentage. He’s completed 62.9% of his passes for 6302 yards and 53 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.

He and Bryce Petty (Baylor, 2011-14) are the only two FBS quarterbacks since 1956 with 800-plus career completions, 50-plus touchdown passes and 10 or fewer interceptions.

Singleton, the former Gov. Mifflin star, leads returning FBS players with 2,912 rushing yards, 32 rushing TDs and 4,673 all-purpose yards. He has a chance to finish his career as the Nittany Lions’ leader in rushing yards, all-purpose yards, rushing TDs and TDs overall.

He was named to the Walter Camp Preseason All-America team.

Allen ranks second among returning FBS players with 2,877 rushing yards and is tied for fourth with 24 rushing TDs.

Penn State begins practice Wednesday.
