Virginia Tech football: Kyron Drones, Terion Stewart named to Maxwell Award Watch List

How good will the Virginia Tech Hokies be in 2025? Unlike last season, there are zero expectations for the upcoming season, which can be a good thing. Last season’s team had high expectations and finished with a 6-6 regular-season record.

Much of what the Hokies do this season depends on quarterback Kyron Drones. Will he be healthy? How will he acclimate to new offensive coordinator Phillip Montgomery’s offense?

This week, the Maxwell Football Club announced its watch list for the 2025 Maxwell Award, given annually to college football’s Most Outstanding Player. Drones was one of 80 players named to the list. The 6-foot-2 quarterback struggled with multiple injuries last season, but was recently given a clean bill of health ahead of fall camp.

He wasn’t the only Hokie named to the list. Terion Stewart, a 5-foot-9, 222-pound running back from Sandusky, Ohio, transferred to Virginia Tech this offseason after spending the last two seasons at Bowling Green. Stewart was one of three transfer running backs for the Hokies this offseason as they look to replace Bhayshul Tuten. Stewart is expected to be the Hokies’ starter.

In addition to losing Tuten, Drones will also be without wide receivers Jaylin Lane, Quan Felton and Stephen Gosnell, and will play behind a completely rebuilt offensive line, which should be an overall improvement.

The Maxwell Award was established in 1937.
