Has a front-runner emerged in quarterback battle?

Ohio State is five practices into training camp, and the burning question of August looks no closer to a resolution.

No front-runner apparently has emerged in the battle between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz to succeed Will Howard as the Buckeyes’ quarterback.

“They both have had good moments, and moments where they’re growing,” coach Ryan Day said Aug. 5. “The competition continues. But I will say that I’ve been pleased with the progress. We’re not where we need to be, but if they continue to learn from the mistakes they’re making and continue to grow off the plays that they’re doing well and moving the offense and taking care of the football, then it’s going to go right down to the wire.”

The opener against Texas is Aug. 30, so there’s plenty of urgency for the quarterbacks to be ready, if not for Day to announce a starter. Day likened the next week to a Saturday on the PGA Tour, commonly known as moving day for golfers trying to climb the leaderboard.

“It’s moving week,” Day said.

Sayin is perceived to be a slight favorite because of his status as a five-star recruit and was the third-stringer last year behind Howard and Devin Brown, who transferred to California.

But Kienholz was named an Iron Buckeye in the offseason for his work in the weight room. He believes he’s a vastly improved player than the one thrust before he was ready into the Cotton Bowl loss to Missouri at the end of the 2023 season.

Sayin and Kienholz have quite different backgrounds. Sayin grew up near San Diego and had a private quarterback coach from a young age. Kienholz was a three-sport star in South Dakota who didn’t enroll at OSU until after spring practice his freshman year.
