Michigan’s young EDGE rushers vie for 2025 rotation spots

We know about the starting edge rushers for Michigan football entering 2025, but what about the backups and younger pass rushers?

It wasn’t that long ago that fifth-year senior TJ Guy was an up-and-coming EDGE, and he finally sprang into action as a reserve and occasional starter last year. But there’s a bumper crop of young talent that hasn’t seen the field as much that we may see this year.

One we have seen that’s expected to be in rotation is junior Cameron Brandt, who Wink Martindale called ‘a bruiser’ on Saturday. So what makes him that? Guy shared more on Monday about what makes him unique.

“He’s got heavy hands,” Guy said. “We’ll have drills with arm shields and swipes, or we’ll do it with each other. You’ve got to watch out when he goes, because his hands are heavy as hell, bro.”

The other who is expected to see the field early and often is sophomore Dominic Nichols, but there are two other second-year players, and a freshman, who very well could find themselves in rotation this year.

Lugard Edokpayi was a late addition to the 2024 class, announcing for Michigan on early signing day in December 2023. Devon Baxter had committed earlier in the cycle, but enrolled early, giving him more time on task. Nate Marshall, who was a five-star on the old Rivals rankings, had committed last spring, before flipping to Auburn in the summer and back again in December.

Now all three are getting work in fall camp, and Guy says that he wouldn’t be surprised to see any of them in action this fall.

“Lu and Dev really competing for that next, after the other four, they’re really competing,” Guy said. “Nate’s looking really good. He’s just a raw, talented, freshman young guy. He’s going to learn the system, but definitely has a lot of talent. But yeah, Lu and Dev, they look really good, too.
