With the University of Akron and Kent State football teams in camps and set to begin the upcoming football season, attention will invariably turn to the non-conference schedule.
In the past, both programs would take on at least two Power 4 conference schools, which provide lucrative paydays. In recent years, that’s changed for the Zips.
They will play one powerhouse on the road — Nebraska — on Sept. 6.
Kent, however, still welcomes the significant sums of money such matchups provide and will take on three prestigious programs.
Who will the Akron Zips play from the Power 4; how much will the school make?
The Zips will play the storied Nebraska Cornhuskers. The two teams’ last meeting was in 1997, a 45-point loss for UA.
According to their contract with the Nebraska athletic department, they will receive $1.45 million for traveling to Lincoln.
Kent State football’s modus operandi has been to schedule multiple Power 4 foes
Kent is stocking up on Power 4 opponents this season, which will fill the athletic department’s coffers once again to the tune of $4.2 million, according to contracts provided to the Beacon Journal.
The Golden Flashes will travel to Texas Tech Sept. 6 and pick up $1.5 million for the trip. Florida State beckons two weeks later on Sept. 20 for a $1.2 million payday.
The final check of significance comes Oct. 4 against the Oklahoma Sooners for which they will earn $1.5 million.
