After Iowa football running back Kaleb Johnson finished as a finalist for the award in 2024, the Hawkeyes’ sophomore running back Kamari Moulton has earned a spot on the 2025 Doak Walker Award Watch List, according to an announcement made by the PwC SMU Athletics Forum on Tuesday.
The award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top college running back, is named for SMU’s three-time All-American running back Doak Walker. First awarded in 1990, this season marks the 35th edition of the prestigious honor.
At 5-foot-9 and 205 pounds, Moulton played in 12 games (starting two), where he rushed for 473 yards and three touchdowns in 2024. In a 29-13 win at Maryland, he amassed a career-high 114 yards, including a career-long 68-yard touchdown run.
With the native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., serving as the presumptive starter for Kirk Ferentz and the Hawkeyes this season, Moulton will have large shoes to fill in what could be a memorable year for the black and gold.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name 10 semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will also be announced in November.
The National Selection Committee, consisting of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members, and selected special representatives, will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. The winner of the 2025 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on Dec. 12, 2025.
Iowa has had only one winner in the award’s 34-year history, when former Hawkeye Shonn Greene won it in 2008. Albert Young was a semifinalist in 2005, while Kaleb Johnson was a finalist in 2024.
