The Oregon Ducks know better than anyone that the college football landscape is rapidly shifting. What once was an institution of stability and integrity has devolved into an erratic space where players move on from programs sometimes as quickly as they join them.
With this in mind, the recruiting process is now more imperative than ever before as teams rely heavily on commitments to supplement the talent they are bound to lose. The Ducks lost ten players to the NFL Draft, and a poor start to the recruiting season had fans and pundits nervous that things may be changing in Eugene.
Quite the contrary.
In recent months, Oregon has turned up the pressure in the recruiting process, securing multiple five-star commitments in the last month. Over the past 60 days, the Ducks secured the commitments of four composite 5-star players, and four composite 4-star players, jumping from No. 42 to No. 7 in the 247Sports recruiting rankings.
Their recent success landing high school prospects saw the Ducks labeled as the biggest winners of the summer recruiting stretch, above powerhouses such as Georgia and Alabama, according to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals.
Head coach Dan Lanning is the mastermind behind Oregon’s transformation from a great school to an elite school, and one of the ways he did this was by landing elite high school talent. He has proven to be one of the best recruiters in the nation, which has allowed his team to post the fourth-best record in college football since his arrival.
Heading into Lanning’s fourth year as the leader of the Ducks, it’s safe to say that as long as he is around, they will continue racking up the commitments.
