LSU legend Marcus Spears has made it clear that head coach Brian Kelly is on the hot seat this year.
The former Notre Dame head coach hasn’t met expectations since arriving in Baton Rouge, and now fans and alums like Spears are getting restless.
Although the Tigers won the SEC West back in 2022, they haven’t accomplished much since. Players are leaving the program, and the LSU defense has been less than stellar these past few years under Kelly.
Spears warned Kelly on “Get Up” if he doesn’t get his act together, he may be looking for a new job next year.
“If you don’t win big, if you’re Brian Kelly, this fan base is done…” Spears said. “If they’re on the outside looking in, in the playoffs, this fan base is going to turn quickly on Brian Kelly.”
Especially now, knowing that one Nicholas Lou Saban is available again, and many LSU fans still hold him in high regard.
There have been rumors floating around for weeks that Saban wants to coach again, and LSU fans would love it if he came back to Baton Rouge and coached the Tigers. During Saban’s time as head coach, he led LSU to an SEC title and a national championship.
Kelly was expected to do the same, but has fallen short of the expectations set for the team.
Saban says he expects the Tigers to be contenders this year; however, that might be tough considering that Texas, Georgia, and Alabama are all contenders as well and all have beaten LSU over the past few years.
There is a small margin for error for Kelly to get things done. The Tigers open up with Clemson, but they also have to face Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Alabama on the road this year in Tuscaloosa.
If he can’t get the season off to a great start, it might be a long year for LSU and Brian Kelly.
