Former Montgomery Catholic head coach Kirk Johnson was announced Friday, August 8 as the head coach of the Alabama All-Stars team for the 39th Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic football game.
Johnson led Montgomery Catholic to two consecutive state titles in his four years with the Knights, compiling the winningest record in the school’s history at 55-2. The only two losses came in the playoffs for Johnson.
Now in his first year with Benjamin Russell, Johnson makes the move to 6A and will have a lot of attention on a program that fields the state of Alabama’s number one recruit in Alabama University commit, Cederian Morgan.
At the age of 35, Johnson might be the youngest head coach ever selected to helm a team in the All-Star Classic.
In fact, the Alabama all-stars team will feature a young, up and coming staff all across the board with the average age of the staff coming in at just 41 years old.
None of the 10 coaches set to coach the all-stars have posted 100 career wins and all but one coach, Mars Hill Bible’s Darrell Higgins, is under the age of 50.
That doesn’t have cause for alarm because six of the 10 coaches on the staff compiled by Johnson have won a state championship. Collectively they’ve compiled an impressive record of 119-18 record in the 2024 season for a winning percentage of 86.9 percent.
