One of the top developments to come out of the Texas Tech football team’s first preseason scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 9, was John Curry’s switch from inside linebacker to star, a hybrid outside linebacker/safety spot in the defense.

Red Raiders coaches are trying to find playing time for the sophomore from Coronado. There’s not much available behind returning starters Ben Roberts, who Curry backed up last year, and Jacob Rodriguez, for whom he was understudy coming out of spring.

Turns out, there are multiple players shuffling through star. Mike Dingle and returning starter A.J. McCarty, the pre-camp 1-2 at that spot, have missed time with injuries. Touted new edge players David Bailey from Stanford and Romello Height from Georgia Tech have been working there, too.

“He’s very smart,” Ah You said of Bailey. “He’s learning three positions, and he has picked that up very well. The work ethic is there. He’s always in the building. You’ve got to kick him out sometimes for his own good.”

Curry’s playing star feels like a move that could be more lasting. Doing it with Height and Bailey likely falls under the heading of cross-training; i.e., broadening their position possibilities. If injuries deplete that position at some point in the season, they could fall back on training they took there in camp. Or they could be…
