One week after hosting the Oregon Ducks on homecoming, Rutgers football will hit the road to take on the Purdue Boilermakers in West Lafayette. Rutgers has a 2-0 record against Purdue, with a 14-12 squeaker in 2017, followed by a 37-30 win in West Lafayette. The programs have not faced off since, making this the first football contest between the sides in five years.
Purdue is coming off a 1-11 season, but brings in head coach Barry Odom, who helped the UNLV Rebels win eleven games last season and nine the year before. The Boilermakers will look significantly different this season, with over 40 transfers joining the program in the hopes of giving the team a boost.
The Boiler offense will be led by former USC offensive coordinator Josh Henson and will look to put more points on the board after being shut out multiple times in Big Ten play. Odom has a decision to make at quarterback, with Ryan Browne returning to the roster after a brief transfer to UNC for the spring. Purdue also added Evans Chuba from Washington State and Malachi Singleton from Arkansas to compete for the starting spot, and the competition is still ongoing.
The offensive line is also completely revamped, with all five starters coming from the transfer portal. Giordano Vaccaro from the University of Manitoba should be the team’s starting center, while Auburn’s Brayden Joiner and UNLV’s Jalen St. John will likely occupy the team’s starting guard positions. At tackle, Indiana State transfer Jude McCoskey is expected to play on the right side of the line, while Notre Dame transfer Joey Tanona will likely hold down the left tackle spot. Some quality depth pieces include Tyrell Green from Eastern Kentucky at right guard and Georgia transfer Marques Easley.
