COLUMBIA — No South Carolina football fan wants to think about what happens if star LaNorris Sellers gets hurt.
The 6-foot-3, 240-pound quarterback returns for his second year as starter, and Sellers finished the 2024 season off a lot better than he started it. After a rocky first week, Sellers battled various injuries, ranging from a minor issue for one quarter in Week 2, to missing the second half a week later, then a full game in Week 4.
Coach Shane Beamer had an advantage with Auburn transfer Robby Ashford as Sellers’ backup last year. When his star went out, Beamer wasn’t throwing in a 18-year old with no college snaps to go win the game.
If Sellers gets hurt again this year, Ashford isn’t waiting in the wings. He transferred to Wake Forest, which leaves the backup competition open, though Beamer has basically said the spot is Luke Doty’s to lose.
Luke Doty in sixth South Carolina season
Doty is a 6-2, 215-pound graduate student who has played quarterback, wide receiver and special teams throughout his career in Columbia. In 2021, he played quarterback but battled through injuries, finishing 86-for-143 (60.1 %) for 975 yards with five TDs and three interceptions in five games, (four starts).
In 2022, he played quarterback in five games and went 10-for-14 for 146 yards with two touchdowns. In 2023, he played in all 12 games mainly at wide receiver, in addition to limited time on special teams and as quarterback. He caught 13 passes for 123 yards (one TD), and completed 2 of 4 passes for 17 yards.
Last year, Doty played in 11 games as a receiver and had three catches for 17 yards.
During the 2025 spring game, Doty played opposite Sellers and got more reps than Air Noland and Cutter Woods and walk-on Jimmy Francis. Doty went 10-of-12 passing for 85 yards and a touchdown.
