It’s official, well unofficial. According to the Tuscaloosa News, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer has told the team Monday night that he has named Ty Simpson as the Tide’s starting quarterback.
Multiple sources close to the program are reporting the same thing. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to most, as Simpson has been the most impressive throughout fall camp.
He was especially impressive during this past Saturday’s first scrimmage, so much so that DeBoer said that an official announcement would be made this week after this Saturday’s second scrimmage.
“I feel like we’re getting closer,” Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer said after the Crimson Tide’s first scrimmage. “I would’ve said before camp that we definitely got to make a decision by the time we get done with the second scrimmage, and I would anticipate, for sure, that being the case. We’ll see kind of how the next few days go. But it’s two good showings, I think, especially by Austin and Ty again today, and I think Keelon making the progress we’d hope for. You can see what his ceiling is going to be, it’s just a matter of reps.”
Another hint that Simpson would be made starter is what former Tide quarterback Greg McElroy said this Monday morning on his show about how impressive Simpson looked.
“The decisiveness of Ty getting the ball out, knowing exactly where you go with the football, let your feet talk to you, I thought he only had one bad decision the entire day.” One, and this is practice nine?!? That’s phenomenal!”
An official may not be made until the end of the week.
