What happened in the first preseason scrimmage for Texas

AUSTIN, Texas — As the Texas Longhorns went through the program’s first scrimmage of preseason camp on Saturday, head coach Steve Sarkisian introduced a slightly different format as with drives by the ones, twos, and then threes as the defense performed at high levels, continuing a trend from the start of camp that Sarkisian said last week is reflective of the best teams he’s coached.

“All three groups, ones, twos, threes, came out and had a really good first drive, the second drive, the first offense, the second offense ,and the third offense all had really good drives inside the five, and then they didn’t finish those drives, and so that was a great stand by the defense to hold them there,” Sarkisian said.

The offense bounced back in the red-zone lockout period.

“I thought the offense performed really well and won that period,” Sarkisian said.

After halftime, the first-team defense had some struggles as the second-team defense experienced more success. Then the third-team offense mounted a 99-yard drive.

In the subsequent two-minute drill, the first-team and second-team offenses both had drives that resulted in game-winning field goals.

“I liked the balance. I liked the competitiveness of the scrimmage. I liked the physicality of the scrimmage — we’re playing really physical football on both sides of the ball,” Sarkisian said.

An area for emphasis as Texas practice in the Bubble on Monday was an reducing the sloppiness that was typical of the first scrimmage in preseason camp, including pre-snap penalties.

The defense was more sharp in its execution getting players to the ground.

“I loved the way we tackled in the first scrimmage. The defensive coaches will tell you we had 15 missed tackles, but there were no really egregious missed tackles — a lot of them were in the line of scrimmage. So I…
