College football coaches across the nation have given Army a measure of respect with their preseason polling, but not so much the writers and broadcasters.
Defending American Conference football champion Army received only two votes and ranks No. 47 overall in the Associated Press preseason polling.
Texas, Penn State, Ohio State, Clemson and Georgia hold down the top five AP spots. The next five are Notre Dame, Oregon, Alabama, LSU and Miami.
The second ten include Arizona State at No. 11, Illinois, South Carolina, Michigan, Florida, Southern Methodist, Kansas State at No. 17 (Army plays at KSU on Sept. 6), Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Indiana. The final five spots are Mississippi, Iowa State, Texas Tech, Tennessee and Boise State.
A total of 49 teams received at least one vote from the writers and broadcasters. From the American, Tulane is tied for No. 33, Memphis is Memphis is tied for No. 38 and Navy is tied for No. 42.
In last week’s release of the US LBM coaches poll, Army ranked No. 35 with 33 points, with Memphis at No. 34, Tulane No. 36 and Navy No. 42.
Army finished 12-2 a year ago, and finished No. 21 in the AP and coaches polls.
Army opens the season on August 29 when Tarleton State visits.
