Former Texas A&M quarterback and the program’s second Heisman Trophy winner, Johnny Manziel, needs no introduction, and after just two seasons as the Aggies’ starting signal caller, the Kerrville, Texas native has continued to make the media rounds, including his recent stop on the Pat McAfee Show on Thursday afternoon, and was immediately asked to provide his opinion on the future of Texas A&M football.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed, whose dual-threat skill set is similar to Manziel’s during his two years in College Station, was the topic of conversation, brought up by Anthony “Tone Digz” DiGuilio, stating that Reed has a little “Money Manziel” to his game, as he’ll enter the 2025 season as the full time starter after trading starts with now Houston QB Conner Weigman last Season.
Manziel, who has stayed very close to the program after coach Mike Elko was hired at the end of the 2023 season, is fully bought with Marcel Reed as the starter, feeling, like many of who cover the program, that a full offseason as the starter should result in at least marginal improvement as a passer, which was an issue at times last season.
“Having the full offseason to be able to get the reps, have the time, especially week in, week out throughout the season, will benefit him tremendously compared to what he was doing last year.”
Manziel revealed that he and Reed had a “20 or 30 minute conversation” after Manziel reached out via social media, providing advice from his time as one of college football’s premier stars, while pointing out that Reed’s memorable performance during Texas A&M’s 38-23 comeback win over LSU proved that he can take the reigns, and becoming one of the top signal callers in the SEC.
