Deion Sanders among the most interesting people in college football

College football is full of dignitaries, celebrity fans, elite players and notable coaches. Each group brings something unique to the sport that keeps fans invested.

For Colorado football, that figure is by far head coach Deion Sanders. The third-year coach has completely revitalized the Buffaloes, placing the program back in the national spotlight.

The Athletic recently named 2025’s 25 most interesting college football people, and Sanders unsurprisingly made the list. Since moving up to the power conference level, Sanders’ impact and success have exceeded expectations.

“A lot of people in college football would have bet a lot of money a couple of years ago that Sanders wouldn’t still be coaching Colorado at this point,” Joe Rexrode wrote in The Athletic. “But here he is, watching Travis Hunter and son Shedeur Sanders from afar, fighting through cancer and trying to prove this program has substance and staying power. It’s hard not to respect that.”

Sanders’ message and goals are indeed palpable to a Colorado fan base in desperate hopes of a program that can win consistently. He was a hire that shook the status quo in Boulder, one that needed to change.

The CU head man is one of six head coaches to make the list, along with UNC’s Bill Belichick, Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire, Penn State’s James Franklin, South Carolina’s Shane Beamer and Illinois’ Bret Bielema.

While all six make the list for different reasons, Sanders is arguably the biggest name of the bunch. He enters his third season at the helm, hoping to improve a team that finished 9-4 in 2024.

Sanders and the Buffs open the year against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Aug. 29.
