Notre Dame football punter James Rendell supports Archie Wilson

SOUTH BEND — Notre Dame football punter James Rendell, even as a man in his mid-20s, needed time to adjust to the American lifestyle after arriving from Australia about 14 months ago.

So, Rendell could empathize with his fellow Prokick Australia product Archie Wilson, the Nebraska freshman punter who went viral with his emotional answer about how much he missed his family as he was about to turn 19.

“I did see that video,” Rendell said Friday Aug. 15 after practice. “I haven’t reached out to him yet, but he’s from Melbourne around the same area as me (Frankston). He’s a little bit younger, so I think the adjustment for me coming over here may have been a little easier.

“I can’t imagine coming over as an 18-year-old, but from what I hear he’s a good kid.”

Nebraska Huskers punter Archie Wilson, 19, broke down in tears speaking about missing his family in Australia during a press conference.

Wilson, who played Australian Rules Football for Haileybury College, broke down in tears as he talked about his parents, Jessica Bach and Lee Wilson, and two younger brothers.

“That’s the tough part about being here,” Wilson told reporters. “I love them a lot and I miss them. They know this is what’s best for me.”

Wilson said his family will come visit for the first few games of the Cornhuskers season, which starts Aug. 28 against Cincinnati at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium.

“I think that’s just what it’s all about,” said Rendell, 25. “Getting outside your comfort zone, embracing a challenge of moving across the other side of the world, I think he’ll go well.”
