The strategy behind Alabama football’s scrimmage time change

Alabama football’s first scrimmage of fall camp came bright and early, but shifting to a 2:30 p.m. kickoff for the final faceoff leading up to the start of the 2025 season was no coincidence.

Coach Kalen DeBoer told media on Saturday that the move was strategic. One made to simulate what the Crimson Tide might face in Tallahassee when opening up the season at Florida State on Aug. 30 at, you guessed it, 2:30 p.m. CT.

“We actually had it originally scheduled earlier, moved it back just to get a little more heat,” DeBoer explained. “And it was good for us.”

DeBoer opened up his post-scrimmage press conference by highlighting that one of the “best things” that happened was Saturday being “one of the warmer days” of fall camp, and seeing how his players worked through it.

Alabama football’s rescheduled scrimmage wasn’t by accident, but strategy

“We saw that all week brewing and took advantage of it,” DeBoer said. “It’s actually been too nice on campus. Especially in the morning.”

Before − and after − the scrimmage, folks in Tuscaloosa got a good taste of what Florida might be like. The Saturday forecast had a high of 94 degrees, and the team grinded through it just in time to outrun the thunderstorm that followed their time on the field in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Per AccuWeather’s monthly forecast for Tallahassee, the Crimson Tide can expect a high of 86 degrees that’s certain to feel that much higher with humidity from the thunderstorm anticipated to rain down that morning.

“We conditioned at the end, did some extra work,” DeBoer said. “Just trying to get ready in every way possible.”
