Why 2025 is a tipping point for Auburn football — not just Hugh Freeze

Cam Newton, one of the most dominant players in recent college football memory, is soon to have his No. 2 jersey retired forever.
Newton, who won the 2010 Heisman Trophy while leading Auburn to an undefeated BCS national championship run, will have his number retired by the Tigers before their game against Georgia on Oct. 11, the school announced on Monday, Aug. 18. Newton will join Pat Sullivan (No. 7), Bo Jackson (No. 34) and Terry Beasley (No. 88) as former Auburn players to have their numbers retired by the program.
“Auburn will always be home to me,” Newton said in the announcement “The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired alongside legends like Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson, and Terry Beasley is an incredible honor that I’ll cherish forever. War Eagle!”
Auburn went 14-0 in 2010 behind Newton’s 50 combined touchdowns, also winning the SEC championship en route to the BCS title. He also won the Walter Camp, Maxwell, Manning and Davey O’Brien awards in his lone season as a college starter, passing for 2,854 yards with 30 touchdowns and rushing for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores.
“Cam Newton not only led Auburn to a national championship in 2010, but he produced one of the most prolific seasons ever by a college football player,” said Auburn athletics director John Cohen. “Retiring Cam’s jersey number is a fitting way to celebrate his lasting impact on Auburn University and Auburn Athletics for all time.”
