It might seem crazy, but we are officially less than two weeks away from Michigan State football’s opening game against Western Michigan. The second year of the Jonathan Smith era is almost here, and we now know who will be leading the team internally as the team captains. It’s an interesting group of players, and the social media team put together an interesting graphic to showcase it.
This year’s captains will be:
C Matt GulbinDL Quinndarius DunniganLB Jordan HallQB Aidan ChilesLB Sam Edwards
As I noted above, this is an interesting mix of players for this group. You have one incoming transfer, Matt Gulbin, who is a threat to win the Rimington Trophy for the best center in college football. There is Quinndarius Dunnigan, who will be playing in his seventh season of college football, and his second with the Spartans. Of course, you also have Aidan Chiles, the Spartans’ starting quarterback who was also a captain last season.
Next, there is Sam Edwards. Edwards is primarily a special teams player on the field, and off the field, has been known to be one of the leaders of the program and also represents MSU on the NCAA Division I Football Student-Athlete Connection Group. Edwards was also the honorary captain in week one last year.
Finally, there is Jordan Hall, the MSU linebacker who enters his junior year with high expectations this season. It’s very intriguing that he is front and center on this graphic. That could be nothing, but it kind of feels like a statement, after Hall spent last season waiting in the wings behind incoming transfer Jordan Turner.
