You’re Nuts: What will be Ohio State’s biggest hurdle to overcome in 2025?

Everybody knows that one of the best parts of being a sports fan is debating and dissecting the most (and least) important questions in the sporting world with your friends. So, we’re bringing that to the pages of LGHL with our favorite head-to-head column: You’re Nuts.

In You’re Nuts, two LGHL staff members will take differing sides of one question and argue their opinions passionately. Then, in the end, it’s up to you to determine who’s right and who’s nuts.

This week’s topic: What will be Ohio State’s biggest hurdle to overcome in 2025?

Gene’s Take: Replacing the entire defensive line

Some of Ohio State’s most memorable moments defensively last year — both good and bad — involved the defensive line.

Early in the year, the storyline was the unit’s shortcomings. The Buckeyes failed to get any sort of consistent pressure throughout most of the regular season, highlighted especially by their zero-sack performance against Oregon in a 32-31 loss. Ohio State had two total QB hurries in the game, both by J.T. Tuimoloau, as Dillon Gabriel carved them up to the tune of 373 total yards and three touchdowns.

The defensive line again failed to create much pressure against a bad Michigan offense, although Wolverines quarterback Davis Warren only dropped back 16 times. Jack Sawyer recorded the team’s lone QB hurry, and poor defensive line play overall aided in producing a 177-yard rushing performance in a stunning victory for TTUN.

That being said, Sawyer did also make what should have been the play of the game with an interception in the end zone during what at the time was a tie ballgame midway through the fourth quarter. While the takeaway didn’t ultimately end up leading to an Ohio State win, it may have lit a spark in what had been an otherwise disappointing position group.
