The buzz surrounding the Oklahoma Sooners’ new starting quarterback, John Mateer. He’s been included on a number of watch lists this offseason and is a dark horse candidate to contend for the Heisman Trophy. On Wednesday, Mateer was included on another watch list, this time for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award goes to the offensive player of the year who played his high school or college football in the state of Texas or was born in Texas.
Oklahoma Sooners quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray won the awards in back-to-back seasons during their Heisman runs in 2017 and 2018. The two were standout quarterbacks in Texas high school football and started their careers at universities in the state of Texas before transferring to Oklahoma.
Mateer could be on a similar path with the Sooners in 2025. Though there are more unknowns on the offensive side of the ball than there were when OU entered the 2017 or 2018 seasons, Mateer could very well be the answer to a lot of the questions with his dual-threat ability. The former three-star quarterback has been lauded for his ability to make plays when things break down and for his competitive drive.
And if he’s able to translate that to Oklahoma and the SEC, Mateer could end the season in the running for a number of postseason awards.
