Concord Minutemen score five touchdowns in win against Elkhart Lions

ELKHART ― Concord and Elkhart football do not share a conference. They’re not even in the same classification when it comes to the IHSAA playoffs.

The rivalry between the two is real, though. That was evident on the faces of both sidelines after Concord prevailed, 35-29, on the Lions’ home field Friday, Aug. 22.

The game was chippy and filled with trash talk throughout, but the teams shook hands in a line afterwards as is tradition. Once both sides broke into respective huddles afterward, Concord head coach Craig Koehler ran toward his team with joy as the Minutemen rose from kneels to their feet with a collective roar.

“It’s a big game for the town,” said Koehler. Both schools have Elkhart addresses. “It’s a big game for our kids, it’s a big game for their kids … and it’s two good teams. That’s a big win for us.”

It’s the third straight season in which Concord has topped Elkhart, and each time it’s been by no more than 10 points. The Minutemen were ranked as the ninth-best Class 5A team in the preseason Indiana High School Football Coaches Association poll, while the Lions garnered top-10 votes in Class 6A.

Clutch defensive plays from Concord decided the game, including a sack within the red zone from senior Derek Gomez and a combined wrap-up of junior Elkhart quarterback Micah Jarrell by the Minutemen’s sophomore Tarahji Jones and senior DeAngelo Lucas when Jarrell tried to scramble for a first down on 4th-and-10 with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter.
