Santa Fe wins in a thriller; Polk County high school football scores

It was a good football game between Santa Fe Catholic and Out-of-Door Academy Friday night at Santa Fe Catholic. But in the end, the Hawks came out on top by a score of 27-20 to go to 2-0 on the year.

The Hawks were actually down 13-0. But scratching and crawling, it came down to a timely interception by senior defensive back Bryson White, which set up a junior quarterback Gabriel Rivera touchdown pass to senior wide reciever Zyrell Thomas on a play on third down.

“On a scale of 1-10, I’m at a 12 with how impressed I am,” Santa Fe head football coach Gabriel Walker said after the game. “We overcame adversity and stayed together also a 0-13 deficit. Much more work needed for us though.”

But Rivera just needed the two touchdown passes, one to Thomas and the other to junior wide reciever Drew McGrath.

Helping these players score was, of course, the offensive line, which was led by junior lineman Brody Davis.

Still, it was the defense that kept the offense in it, especially after going down by two scores. Sophomore defensive lineman Bertran Bates was a menace on the defensive side of the football, while also blocking very well on offense.

What a game.

Santa Fe will next play Canterbury next Friday at home. Below are the other Polk County Friday night games.

Victory Christian 48, Oxbridge 6

Victory’s Cru Slocum tossed three touchdown passes, one each to Drew Morrison, Bruce Earby, and Preston Garcia.

Also, freshman Kash Johnson managed two big third down sacks on defense.

Victory will next play Moore Haven next Friday on the road.

George Jenkins 28, Lake Region 20

The Eagles escaped by a touchdown to move to 1-0 on the year.

It came down to George Jenkins quarterback David Soto, who ran it in on a quarterback counter for 24 yards with two minutes left, which put the Eagles up 28-14. This drive started with eight minutes left, yet…
