Who will be LSU’s three permanent opponents in new schedule format?

The SEC is making changes to its scheduling format. The most notable is the move to nine conference games, up from eight. The SEC has been debating that change for some time now and after the College Football Playoff announced it would weigh strength of schedule more, the SEC made it official.

With the move to nine games, each SEC team with have three permanent conference foes and the remaining six games will be rotational.

There’s no timetable for when the three permanent opponents will be announced, but something will be revealed later this fall. The SEC typically releases next year’s schedule around October.

The new scheduling format leaves LSU in an interesting position. Most programs in the SEC have two or three natural rivals that stand out. LSU doesn’t have a true mega rival like Ole Miss has in Mississippi State or Alabama has in Auburn. That leaves LSU with plenty of potential options for who the three permanent opponents could be. Here’s a look at what LSU fans should expect.

Ole Miss Rebels

LSU vs. Ole Miss isn’t on the same level as the best rivalries in the conference, but there’s a lot of history here. The game is dubbed “The Magnolia Bowl” and in recent years, this has been among the most entertaining games in the country.

Keeping this game on the schedule makes sense for both schools.

Ole Miss has its Egg Bowl rivalry with Mississippi State, but after that, there aren’t many obvious candidates for Ole Miss’ permanent opponents outside of LSU. The schools are close in proximity, which makes travel easier for teams and fans. Don’t expect the LSU vs. Ole Miss game to leave the schedule anytime soon.

Alabama Crimson Tide

There’s a little more debate with this one. Auburn and Tennessee will certainly be included on Alabama’s schedule, which leaves the Tide with one open slot. It’s hard to imagine the SEC saying…
