Louisville football coach Jeff Brohm talks about what needs to be done ahead of week 1 game against Eastern Kentucky University.
The Cards open against a non-Power Four opponent for the second straight season, which is the first time since 1990 and 1991 that has happened.Style points still matter, which is why Louisville’s potential margin of victory in its early games could be subject to scrutiny by the end of the season.
Louisville football must play to the optics in Saturday’s season opener against Eastern Kentucky. Then again when James Madison comes to town and again with Bowling Green.
All three games take place before the Cardinals measure themselves against an ACC opponent when conference play begins at Pitt on Sept. 27.
It marks the first time since the 1990 and ’91 seasons that Louisville has played consecutive season openers against teams not in the current Power Four conferences. (It should be noted from 1994-2012, U of L opened against Kentucky all but four seasons.) Maybe it’s no fault of their own, considering the Cards tried to schedule Mississippi and Tennessee at separate times when those schools needed to add a game.
The schedule as is left Louisville with three opening games that won’t solicit so much of a bleep on the national radar.
That’s why it’s not enough just to win, the Cards need to look good in doing so.
Margin of victory was used in selecting Bowl Championship Series teams through the first four seasons of its existence. Then in 2002, the computer analytics that helped choose teams were programmed not to include it.
That all changed once the College Football Playoff replaced the BCS in 2014 and a selection committee began making the evaluations to determine who got bids. Not only who teams beat, but how they won…
