ASU football coach Kenny Dillingham on starting center decision
Arizona State football head coach Kenny Dillingham explains why he selected Ben Coleman as his starting center for the 2025 season opener.
A few days before the 2025 season opener against Northern Arizona University, Arizona State formally introduced its members of the Pat Tillman Leadership Council.
On offense, sophomore quarterback Sam Leavitt, junior wide receiver Jordyn Tyson and offensive linemen Ben Coleman, a graduate student, and senior Josh Atkins were selected. Senior safety Xavion Alford, junior cornerback Keith Abney II, defensive tackles C.J. Fite, a junior, and senior Jacob Rich Kongaika, senior defensive end Clayton Smith, and senior linebackers Keyshaun Elliott and Jordan Crook represented the defense.
Tyson, Atkins, Kongaika, Crook and Abney are first-time selections.
The Pat Tillman Leadership Council was created in July 2024 by coach Kenny Dillingham as a way to honor the former Sun Devil who went on to the NFL before leaving the sport for the military and was killed in Afghanistan while serving in the US Army in 2004.
“That was a long time ago. How do we make sure people are still being educated on what he did?” Dillingham said at the time of creating the council. “This is a way that it gives TV networks and it gives people an opportunity to then spend 20 seconds reminding the next future Sun Devil football fans, anybody who’s watching us play, it reminds them, and maybe teaches an 8-year-old who Pat Tillman was.
“It opens up an opportunity for people to continue his legacy. We talk about leadership, and that’s what this is about. What better person to be the name of your leadership team than Pat Tillman? Some things make too much sense.”
The group meets regularly with the coaching staff and gives input on the team’s performance…
