Ohio State placed defensive quality control coach Joe Lyberger on administrative leave last month amid an investigation by the university office that handles complaints of harassment, discrimination and sexual misconduct.
A letter to Lyberger from human resources on Dec. 27 said his leave was to take effect immediately and pending the Office of Institutional Equity’s investigation.
That letter did not provide further details on the allegations that led to the investigation. The communication was obtained this week by The Dispatch through a public records request.

“My client and I take any allegation of wrongdoing very seriously,” said Sam Shamansky, an attorney representing Lyberger. “We respect the process whereby those who are accused have the opportunity to defend themselves, and we look forward to the opportunity.”
Lyberger has been on leave with pay. According to university salary data, he earned $72,100 in 2024.
The stage of the university’s investigation remains unclear. Ohio State declined comment.
Lyberger’s leave began two days before the Buckeyes traveled to Los Angeles for the Rose Bowl, which hosted a College Football Playoff quarterfinal on New Year’s Day, one of their four postseason games along the path to the national championship.
A quality control coach with the Buckeyes since 2021, Lyberger has worked with the linebackers.
He was previously an assistant coach at Bucknell in 2020 and 2019 and at Ohio Dominican in 2018. He was a linebacker at Division II Slippery Rock in 2015.
While on leave, Lyberger is prohibited from being at Ohio State’s facilities, which include the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
