Jaylen McGill’s commitment to Rutgers football turned out to be a short one.
The Class of 2026 running back, who plays at Mountain View Prep in South Carolina, announced on social media Wednesday his decision to reopen his recruitment.
“I Feel Like The Lord Has Called Me Some Place Else,” McGill wrote on X. “I’ve Prayed About This Decision And Reflected On My Decision. With That Being Said I’m Choosing To Reopen My Recruiting Back Up, And I’m Decommitting From The University Of Rutgers. Thank You @RFootball For The Opportunity!”
McGill announced his intention to join the Scarlet Knights during halftime of the Rutgers men’s basketball team’s game against Michigan State at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 25.
Commitments are not binding until recruits sign their letters of intent during the early signing period in December.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound McGill is ranked a four-star prospect and the No. 16 overall running back recruit in the country according to the 247Sports Composite.
McGill also has offers from Alabama, Clemson, South Carolina, Georgia and Texas, among many others.
For Rutgers, losing McGill stings but it helps that running back is a position of strength for the Scarlet Knights.
