At the end of December, while Notre Dame football was still playing in the College Football Playoff, it landed a commitment from Virginia wide receiver transfer Malachi Fields.
It was seen as a massive portal win for the Irish, as the 6-foot, 4-inch Fields enters the program as the most proven option for a group of young quarterbacks who will battle this spring for the starting job.
After back-to-back 800-yard receiving seasons, he is viewed as one of the top options in college football, and Pro Football Focus backed that up on Tuesday. While Fields didn’t quite make their top-10, he was the only player named as an honorable mention, meaning he checked in at No. 11 on their list.
Max Chadwick, who compiled the players, noted that Fields is “leading all returning Power Four receivers in yards” with 1,619. If it weren’t for the question mark at quarterback, he might have placed higher on this list. Either way, Fields will be one of the best receiving threats to come to South Bend over the last few years.
