Wisconsin wide receiver enters the transfer portal

Wisconsin wide receiver Grady O’Neill announced his intention to enter the transfer portal on Tuesday.

The redshirt junior joined the Badgers as a preferred walk-on during the 2022 season. He played sparingly during his three years with the program, seeing action in just three games — all on special teams. Those appearances came against Rutgers, Nebraska and Minnesota during the 2024 season.

The Prior Lake, Minnesota, enters the transfer portal with several years of eligibility remaining. His status as a graduate transfer allows him to enter the portal at any time. That differs from all undergraduate transfers, who now only have two windows — winter and spring — to change programs.

“After thoughtful consideration, I have decided to enter my name into the transfer portal as a graduate transfer with 2-3 years of eligibility remaining,” O’Neill wrote on X. “I would like to think my family for always believing in me, as well as all my coaches and teammates who have helped me grow as a player and person.I’m excited for the opportunities that lie ahead and am forever grateful to have been a part of the UW football family for the past three years.

Wisconsin enters 2024 with Vinny Anthony, transfer Mark Hamper (Idaho) and Trech Kekahuna set to lead its wide receiver corps. The position should be deep with contributors, with transfer Jayden Ballard (Ohio State), Joseph Griffin Jr., Chris Brooks Jr., Quincy Burroughs, Tyrell Henry and Kyan Berry-Johnson all set to compete for snaps.

The position will play a significant role in the success of the Badgers’ offense in its first year under new coordinator Jeff Grimes. Wide receiver was a focal point in Phil Longo’s air raid attack, although the team never had the quarterback play to fully support the position.
