Wink Martindale breaks down several Michigan football defensive backs before spring ball

The Michigan football secondary is a little bit of a mixed bag entering 2025. The Wolverines have a ton of depth at safety but cornerback is a little sketchy in terms of how deep the bench goes comparatively.

The expectation in 2025 is that the Wolverines will get Rod Moore back at safety after he tore his ACL in spring ball last year, but who will start opposite him, should he return, remains a bit of a mystery. Brandyn Hillman, Mason Curtis, Jaden Mangham, and Arkansas transfer TJ Metcalf all appear to be viable options, and any could start if Moore is still working his way back to full strength.

At corner, however, Zeke Berry and Jyaire Hill are the only players who appear ready for primetime. Behind them, there’s a bit more mystery.

On Wednesday, defensive coordinator Wink Martindale appeared on the In the Trenches Podcast and broke down several players on the back-end, sharing what he’s seen from them as well as their likely trajectory entering spring ball.

Zeke Berry on the back end played a number of different positions. I think it’s really difficult because he was projected here as a safety initially, and he went the opposite way. He went from safety to nickel to outside corner because of injuries. So, I think the beginning of the year will start him at an outside corner. And the thing that’s great about Zeke is the athlete that he is, we can put him where we need him.
