Drew Allar lands on CBS Sports top 10 quarterback power rankings

Spring practices are approaching, and players are a week into winter workouts. Spring camp is a time for position battles, especially at the quarterback position. Many programs, especially in the Big Ten, have quarterback competitions; Ohio State, Oregon and Michigan immediately come to mind. Penn State, however, has a leg up on its conference rivals with established starter Drew Allar back for his final year.

CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli released his top 10 power rankings of college football’s top quarterbacks Tuesday morning, with Allar being the only Big Ten quarterback who made his list. Allar slotted into the fourth position of the rankings behind Texas’s Arch Manning, Clemson’s Cade Klubnik and Miami’s Carson Beck

Some were surprised by Allar’s decision to return to Penn State for his senior season, but the Nittany Lions’ starting quarterback wants to take the next step, including putting Penn State in the best position to win a national championship.

Allar is definitely the most accomplished quarterback in the Big Ten, and one could argue that he is the most talented going into the 2025 season.

In Fornelli’s rankings, he gives Allar credit but also notes that we have not seen him reach his potential yet.

“Allar is a Rorschach test of a QB, and at times, it can be hard to defend him,” Fornelli said about Allar. “He’s über-talented and shows flashes of brilliance, but while Penn State reached the semifinals of the College Football Playoff, one could argue they did so in spite of Allar. In three playoff games, he completed only 54.3% of his passes for 6.2 yards per attempt and three touchdowns. And all three touchdowns came against Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl quarterfinal. Still, the talent remains, and if he has a breakthrough this season, Penn State might make a lot of noise.”
