Williams is a Ruston native who served as defensive coordinator at Ruston High School in Louisiana before stepping down in January. He replaces Bo Davis, who left to be the defensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints this offseason.
LSU considered multiple candidates to replace Davis, including Florida’s Gerald Chatman, according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman.
Williams was a part of the 2003 national championship team led by former coach Nick Saban. The defensive tackle was drafted in the fifth round in the 2006 NFL draft before blossoming into a six-time Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro in 2010.
Williams finished his LSU career with 46 appearances and 33 starts, recording 16.5 sacks and 140 total tackles. He was a two-time All-SEC player in 2004 and 2005 and was named a second-team All-American as a senior. Williams played the entirety of his 13-year career with the Buffalo Bills, tallying 178 starts in 183 games with 48.5 career sacks and 103 tackles for loss before retiring in 2018.
Williams doesn’t have college coaching experience, but his NFL background and connections to the program should make him a valuable assistant coach on the Tigers’ staff.
