Alabama football DC Kane Wommack sizes up transfers Calhoun, Collins in spring practice

Alabama football defensive coordinator Kane Wommack not only got a handful of NFL-caliber players to choose to stay for another year in 2025, he also picked up several transfers who could play a key role in what should be one of the better defenses in the SEC.

Among them is Cam Calhoun, a cornerback from Utah who broke up nine passes for the Utes last season. And he’s brought some swagger to go along with his skills.

“You can tell he’s been a seasoned player at a place that’s established itself as one of the great defensive (teams) year in, year out at Utah. It’s not an easy task to get on the field in that program, and he was, and was a starter,” Wommack said. “He’s from Cincinnati, and Cincinnati guys, if you’ve ever recruited that area, they’ve got a little something to them. He plays with a good energy and with a mindset of attacking the ball, and brings some juice to our group. We’re a relatively quiet secondary for the most part, so it’s nice to have another guy out there who plays up in people’s face.”

Alabama returns both its starters at cornerback this season, Zabien Brown and Domani Jackson, although Jackson is out for the spring while recovering from an injury. Calhoun figures to be in the mix as Alabama’s third corner. Wommack also remarked on the progress of Kelby Collins, a defensive lineman who transferred from Florida.

“Kelby’s doing both for us, he’s playing inside and outside, which is a lot to ask for a guy coming new,” Wommack said. “But I like some things I see from him. He’s growing and learning into the position, learning the defense, even fundamentally how we do things versus where he was…
