When following the former Bryce Underwood recruiting saga, Michigan football fans were paying attention to the names behind the scenes. From former quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss (who didn’t have much of a relationship with him) to Kirk Campbell (who worked to repair the relationship), there were a lot of names that fans followed.
However, it wasn’t an offensive name that helped keep Michigan’s chances of landing Underwood alive — nor was it anyone currently on staff.
On Wednesday, Underwood appeared on The Rich Eisen Show and discussed his recruitment with the notable Michigan alum. The phenom quarterback noted that his first college offer came via Kentucky, and the coach who recruited him there? Former Michigan cornerbacks coach Steve Clinkscale.
Clinkscale departed Ann Arbor for the NFL when Jim Harbaugh left following the 2023 national championship season. Underwood says that Harbaugh never got involved with his recruitment but Clinkscale kept in touch and that helped when Sherrone Moore and company picked up the pace late in 2024.
“Coach Clink, the one who offered for the University of Kentucky was the same one that offered me for the University of Michigan,” Underwood said. “So he went to Michigan and then he offered me and now he’s at the Chargers.”
If it wasn’t for Clinkscale getting the childhood favorite back on the radar, Michigan might have been sunk when it came to getting back into the fight. Now Underwood has a chance to potentially start for the Wolverines on Aug. 30 against New Mexico, a notion he claimed he is ‘definitely’ fighting for.
