Iowa football reportedly identifies new running backs coach

Per a report from the Des Moines Register’s Chad Leistikow, the Iowa Hawkeyes have zeroed in on their new running backs coach.

Iowa football is expected to hire Omar Young. Young, 41, spent 2024 as an offensive assistant with the New England Patriots on former head coach Jerrod Mayo’s staff.

Prior to his season in New England, Young served two years with the Chicago Bears. During the 2022 season, Young was an offensive quality control coach and then served as the wide receivers coach and as an assistant quarterbacks coach in 2023.

Young also served as an offensive assistant with the Cleveland Browns in 2015 and as an offensive quality control coach with the Green Bay Packers in 2017 and 2018.

The Oakland, Calif., native also had collegiate coaching stops at Eastern Illinois (2019-21) where he coached running backs and served as the director of quality control for the defense and special teams at Colorado during the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Young played two years as a defensive back at Willamette University in Oregon before working as a student assistant and video coordinator for Savannah State’s football program.

Young recently coached the American Team running backs in the 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

The 41-year-old takes over for former Iowa running backs coach Ladell Betts, who departed to become the New York Giants’ new running backs coach. Iowa is replacing first-team All-American running back Kaleb Johnson who set new Iowa single-season records for total points scored (138), total touchdowns (23) and rushing touchdowns (21).

Iowa returns redshirt sophomores Kamari Moulton and Jaziun Patterson, who combined for 170 rushing yards on 23 carries in Iowa’s 27-24 Music City Bowl loss to Missouri.
