SMU hires former Georgia WR as athletic director

SMU Mustangs have hired former Maryland Athletic Director Damon Evans who was previously Georgia’s Athletic Director before his time in Maryland.

Evans spent over two decades at his alma mater Georgia, serving as its Athletic Director from 2004-10. The Bulldogs won 13 national championships and 19 SEC titles during Evans’ time in Athens. Evans resigned from the position after he was arrested for a DUI.

The former Georgia wide receiver was the SEC’s first Black Athletic Director and managed the largest operating profit among college athletic programs. Evans caught 23 passes for 260 yards during his Georgia football career from 1990-1992.

Beginning in 2017 as interim Athletic Director, and becoming permanent in June 2018, Evans led Maryland’s athletic programs to 49 Big Ten titles. Since his arrival in 2014, the university has also celebrated seven national championships.

Evans was named to the College Football Playoff selection committee earlier this month and will serve a three-year term in the role while he is the Mustangs’ new Athletic Director.
