Four takeaways from first week into Ohio State’s spring practice

Ohio State is one week into spring football practice, and the Buckeyes will start to ramp it up.

OSU worked in helmets on Monday, coach Ryan Day said, and will go in pads on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

It is still too early for coaches to make many definitive statements or declare front-runners in position battles such as quarterback. But the vibes seem pretty good for a team that must replace so many key players from the national championship team.

“I think the leadership has been good,” Day said. “I think the effort’s been good. Overall, there’s just a lot of juice in practice, a lot of people moving around with purpose. We’re getting great feedback from recruits and families who come in and watch us work and the way we work.”

Here are four takeaways from what Day, defensive coordinator Matt Patricia and offensive coordinator Brian Hartline said Monday:

Brian Hartline gives a QB update

When Day spoke at the start of spring practice about what he wanted to see from his quarterbacks, he emphasized work ethic, leadership and toughness. Redshirt freshman Julian Sayin, redshirt sophomore Lincoln Kienholz and true freshman Tavien St. Clair lack experience, so they need to show they are pushing themselves to win the trust of teammates and coaches.

So far, so good, according to Hartline.

“I’m impressed with the way they have grown even day to day,” he said. “We’ve already seen improvements from Day 1. Nowhere near where we want to be, but they’re doing a great job spending extra time on their own and being prepared for practice.”

Because last season ended so late, spring practice has been condensed from five weeks to four weeks. That puts more of an onus on the quarterbacks to make the most of…
