Topeka area will be well represented for Saturday’s 51st Kansas Shrine Bowl

TOPEKA — The area will be well-represented in the 51st Kansas Shrine Bowl on Saturday when the event brings together the entire state to celebrate football excellence along with the support of a good cause.

The game will kick off inside Emporia State’s Welch Stadium at 7 p.m.

“It is a special honor and it is definitely a privilege to be a part of such a wonderful experience that is the Shrine Bowl game,” Shawnee Heights head coach Jason Swift said.

Washburn Rural head coach Steve Buhler and Swift will be assistant coaches for the East All-Stars.

Shawnee Heights football coach Jason Swift and coaches across the city can now prepare for the 2020 season after Tuesday’s decision by the KSHSAA executive board not to delay the start of fall high school sports.

Wamego’s Weston Moody was named the head coach for the team. The East will consist of six players from the capital city.

The entire roster consists of recently graduated players. Former Seaman standout and now Kansas State player Callen Barta will suit up at the wide receiver position with Hayden’s Finn Dunshee playing running back.

Shawnee Heights football’s Christian Gonzales was honored at halftime of the boys game on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Gonzales was named to the 51st Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl.

Washburn Rural’s JC Heim, Rossville’s Barrett Lietz and Shawnee Heights’ Christian Gonzales will feature on the defensive front. Lastly, Hayden’s Carter Charvat will play on the offensive line.

“We are practicing two or three practices a day. We are keeping the kids healthy, they are getting a new offensive scheme, defensive scheme,” Swift said. “They are playing with kids that they have never played with. Come Saturday night, they are going to understand the…
