Just a few years ago, it would have sounded absurd to tout LSU as a premier school for quarterback development.
But with two Heisman Trophy-winning signal-callers over the last five seasons, it would be hard to argue otherwise. And while Jayden Daniels is gone after winning the award last season, Garrett Nussmeier looks to be a worthy contender.
He’s only made one start, which was impressive, but he’s also seen quite a bit of game action over his first three seasons. Much of it has been promising, and stepping into an offense that still has quite a bit of talent and an elite offensive line, he seems poised to carry the mantle well this season.
On3’s Jesse Simonton didn’t include Nussmeier among his top 10 Heisman candidates, but he did consider him a potential player who could emerge this season.
While it is unlikely that LSU would produce back-to-back winners, quarterback Garrett Nussmeier at least bears mentioning based on his upside. The Tigers must replace 1st-round receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr., but they have maybe the best OL in the country and have restocked the receiver room. Nussmeier has put up gaudy numbers in spot duty, and now it’s his show.
Winning the Heisman is far from the expectation for Nussmeier, but as LSU looks to make its way into the College Football Playoff field for the first time under Brian Kelly, it’s encouraging that so many national voices see Nussmeier as one of the nation’s better quarterbacks entering 2024.
