Texas A&M loses out on two 2025 recruiting class propsects

Under first-year head coach Mike Elko, Texas A&M’s 2025 recruiting class has continued to grow. It is 18 commitments deep with more to come over the next two months. Sporting 12 Texas-based commits among the 18, Elko and his staff have continued to focus on the Lone Star State, but they know outside competition remains an issue.

Texas A&M’s recruiting success in California, it landed three of the top five prospects in the state, has posed problems for in-state programs like USC. However, as Good Bull Hunting’s Robert Behrens pointed out, seven of the top 10 prospects from Texas have either committed or are predicted to land with a school outside the state.

On Saturday, this trend continued. 2025 four-star linebacker Riley Pettijohn, who was predicted to land with Texas while the Aggies were still in the mix late, committed to Ohio State. Also, the ninth-ranked offensive prospect in the 2025 cycle out of Mesquite, Texas, four-star offensive tackle Lamont Rogers, committed to SEC foe Missouri.

Pettijohn’s decision could be based on name, image and likeness licensing money, but it mostly likely stems from the program’s linebacker development track to NFL longevity, which is completely understandable.

For Rogers, the prospect of immediate playing time at Missouri, a program in need of future offensive line talent, is a significant opportunity. This decision could see him on the field as early as the 2025 season.

Texas A&M is still in a good position to land a commitment from five-star Jonah Williams, the top safety prospect in Texas. Still, after whiffing on nearly every previously favored 2025 and 2026 prospect the last two weeks, Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian has his work cut out for him.
