As teams around the country begin fall camp, it’s the last chance many players will have during the preseason to prove they deserve a role on the field.
LSU has a few players who have big opportunities in camp, but CBS Sports listed defensive back [autotag]Major Burns[/autotag] as one of the players with the most to prove in the entire country after he led the Tigers in tackles last fall with 93 but struggled a bit in coverage, finishing the year with a pick and three pass deflections.
Burns spent most of 2023 at safety, but he has moved to LSU’s STAR (nickel) position ahead of 2024. Here’s what CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer said about his new job.
There’s a chance LSU’s entire secondary is turned over in 2024. Multiple starters have departed, transfers and freshmen have come in looking to make an impact, and the two most senior players in the room (Burns, Sage Ryan) are primed to play new positions. Ryan was forced to play a lot of cornerback last year, but he’s seemingly set for his more natural role at safety. Burns is also transitioning, moving from safety to nickel. Burns, who led LSU in tackles last year, needs to be much steadier in coverage. While Burns drew positive reviews this spring for his improved play, LSU could really use a strong camp from the only real proven veteran presence in its cornerback room.
Burns is one of the most experienced veterans in this secondary, and LSU is expect him to play a big role on what it hopes will be an improved defense in 2024.
